To improve facial wrinkles and furrows, and to replace facial soft tissue volume that is lost with aging.

THE PROCEDURE

The ideal facial filler today is hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that makes up a substantial portion of our body's tissue.

There are dozens of fillers on the market today, but the most popular include Juvederm and Restylane. Both of these have a long history of effectiveness and a high safety profile.

Different viscosities of filler are available, some thinner and better for fine lines, and others thicker and better for deeper furrows or volume filling.

The areas to be treated are selected mutually by you and your surgeon. Some of the filler products have anaesthetic, or "freezing," in them; others do not and you may elect to have a local anaesthetic injected first, or for some people or smaller areas to forego anaesthetic. Topical cream and/or cooling the areas can also be helpful to decrease pain or discomfort. Following injections, cool compresses are applied for a few minutes to decrease bruising and swelling.

THE PROS
Facial fillers can be very effective in improving the following problems related to aging, disease or trauma:
	Nose-cheek furrows.
	Sad" lines or "marionette" lines at the corner of the mouth.
	Lip wrinkles.
	Finer cheek, forehead or crow's feet wrinkles.
	Plumping and elevation of the sagging eyebrow.
	Reducing the dark circles or "tear trough" (hollow under the eyes).
	Volumizing the sagging or hollowed cheek to create cheek bones.
	Volumizing a pre-jowl furrow to diminish the jowly appearance.
	Softening acne or other scars.
	Plumping up sagging, atophic or wrinkly ear lobes.
	Correcting other facial deformities where adding volume may help.
	Plumping up of the upper or lower lip to achieve a naturally youthful, sensuous lip.
By softening wrinkles, smoothening furrows, re-volumizing the face, and elevating depressed scars, you can achieve a rejuvenated, more youthful and softer look for your skin. The hyaluronic acid fillers can be further augmented at any time if desired. They can even be diminished through the injection of hyaluronadaise if it is felt there has been any over-correction. No skin test is required, as hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound in our own bodies - you are just "topping up" what has been lost through natural metabolism. These fillers are lasting from 9-15 months in most people, and in some longer. Treatments are strictly at your own wish. Patient satisfaction, in our experience, is very high.

THE CONS
	Any injection can occasionally cause bruising or swelling.
	Under-correction or over-correction may require a "touch up" (this is less rather than more common).
	Occasionally the filler may be a little "bumpy-lumpy" and require smoothening.

TIME OUT
	Following the injection, which can take from a few minutes to more than 30 minutes depending on the treatments chosen, cool compresses are applied in the office for 10 to 15 minutes.
	A small amount of swelling may be present for a few days. Makeup can be applied immediately.
	You can usually resume social and professional activities the next day, but you can expect two to three days for the majority of swelling to completely settle. Lip augmentation may take several days longer to settle.
